Ah, Valentine’s Day. Here at Animal Farm we think it’s great. Any celebration of love and romance and togetherness is worthwhile in our book.
If you’re visiting our region and looking for a special way to celebrate your love, keep reading! We’ve put our local knowledge to good use and created a list of five great ways to spend Valentine’s Day, Nelson–Tasman style. Time to get inspired. . .
1. Follow your heart to the beach
Beaches are romantic by definition and with over 20 to choose from in Nelson–Tasman, that loved-up feeling is never far away. Many beaches feature great eateries nearby, so after you’ve written your names in the sand at Rabbit Island, hop on the ferry to Mapua and sample its signature seafood. Or dine al fresco and admire the picture-perfect scenery at Kaiteriteri. See other watery ideas here.
Valentine’s Day tip: For a more private beach, check out Totaranui in Golden Bay. Access is by an unsealed road but it’s worth it!
2. Ride the Skywire at Happy Valley Adventures
If your romance is more about heart-pounding adventure than long, languid lunches, try the Skywire, you crazy kids! The world’s longest flying fox ride reaches speeds close to 100 kilometres per hour, lasts for just under 10 minutes and goes backwards as well as forwards. If this doesn’t get you holding hands, nothing will! Only 15 minutes north east of Nelson on Cable Bay Road.
Valentine’s Day tip: Wind down with a horse trek. The views are spectacular.
3. Visit wineries on a Great Taste Trail cycle tour
Lovers of wine, rejoice! The Richmond to Wakefield leg of Tasman’s Great Taste Trail contains the highest concentration of wineries on the route and it’s a leisurely ride through some beautiful country. Local bike hire companies offer packages that can include tastings, lunch and even transport to your starting point.
Valentine’s Day tip: If you’re really keen to get into the spirit of the occasion, hire a tandem bike and pedal together in harmony.
4. Come to Animal Farm and fall in love all over again
Yes, we’re totally biased but we still think a visit to Animal Farm ticks all the boxes on a special day of love and togetherness. Whether you’re on a first date or celebrating your Golden wedding anniversary, we defy you to spend a couple of hours meeting and interacting with our animals without turning into complete mush! They all enjoy being stroked and cuddled—in fact they expect it. As an added bonus, they supply never-ending photo opportunities that will warm your heart for years to come.
Valentine’s Day tip: Grab an ice cream, cool your feet in the stream and whisper sweet nothings together. You know you want to!
5. Pop the question on the jetty at Lake Rotoiti, Nelson Lakes
Against a backdrop like this, how could your Significant Other possibly turn you down?!
Boasting soaring mountain peaks, pristine lakes and magnificent native beech forest, Nelson Lakes National Park provides the epic scenery to match your epic love story. Only an hour’s drive from Nelson, it’s still a well-kept secret. Go and be gob-smacked. It’s gorgeous.
Valentine’s day tip: For maximum dramatic impact, time your visit to coincide with dawn or dusk. The chorus of native birdsong is incredible.
Burn with passion, not heat stroke!
Whether your taste in love runs to the exciting, indulgent, laid-back or dramatic, Nelson–Tasman has something to suit everyone. We’re looking forward to welcoming lots of starry-eyed nature lovers to Animal Farm on 14 February!
Our summer is sizzling just as much as your romance, so whenever you’re outside please remember to wear a hat and sunscreen, and drink plenty of water.
